When I create my characters, I imagine their backgrounds, their likes and dislikes, and the experiences that shaped their personalities. This is how FBI Supervisory Special Agent Finn Callaghan met his partner, Special Agent Kennedy Morris. These two couldn’t have a normal meeting—a hearty handshake over a cup of coffee wouldn’t work for them. They have to deal with a category one hurricane, a missing bride, and Kennedy’s dysfunctional family. Supervisory Special Agent Finn Callaghan is impressed. While teaching a course at Quantico, he witnessed trainee agent Kennedy Morris take down a bully twice her size. Before leaving Washington DC, he stops by her apartment to offer her a job as his partner in Granite City, Montana and is surprised to see a wedding reception in her building during the worst storm of the year.
Kennedy is having a bad day. Her FBI training isn’t going well, her dysfunctional family is visiting, there’s a category one hurricane bearing down on them, and now she has to deal with her attraction to her superior Finn Callaghan. When the bride from the reception, Vanessa Stevens, disappears, Finn offers to help. With Kennedy’s aid, they delve into the world of the rich and powerful. But their investigation reveals that no one really knows Vanessa. When the storm cuts the power and phone lines, they must ascertain if kidnappers have taken advantage of the weather or if the bride is a clever con woman. Yesterday the world marked International Holocaust Memorial Day. Posts on social media reminded us to never forget and not let these atrocities happen again, and yet as we move into 2018 I’m filled with a sense of unease. Now more than ever hate is on the rise. It seems that if you aren’t white, Christian, and straight then you’re out of luck. As a society we label people. We decide who they are by the color of their skin, their sexual orientation, their religion and their politics. This is done to alienate people so instead of seeing them as humans we are forced to think of them as a group. These divisions are more rampant today than they have been in the last seventy years. This is insane when you consider we live in a world where, through the magic of the Internet, we can see, hear and examine the daily existence of our fellow man. Now we can understand what it is to walk in someone else’s shoes and feel what they feel. As Tennessee Williams said, “I think that hate is a thing, a feeling, that can only exist where there is no understanding.” Which to me means if you hate someone because they’re gay, or from another culture, maybe you should get to know them. You might be surprised at how nice they are. If we really must choose labels for human beings then I suggest we choose ones that are significant. Forget about the color of someone’s skin, their culture or sexual orientation. These are the labels that really count.

Available Free at Kobo The Wily Witness is a short story that explains how FBI Special Agent Finn Callaghan – A character from Sun Storm – came to work in Montana. Probationary FBI Agent Finn Callaghan is having a bad day. It’s his second day in the field, and he’s stuck doing his partner’s filing. A teenage boy, Noah Lewis, is arrested for stealing five hundred thousand dollars in diamonds, and Finn is convinced of his innocence. When evidence goes missing and an eccentric old woman turns up claiming to have witnessed the robbery, Finn can’t help but get involved. Can he prove Noah is a gullible patsy or will the youngster be charged with grand larceny in the second degree? Finn Callaghan is a character from the author’s full-length The Gathering Storm Series. Excerpt: FBI Headquarters New York City, New York 8 a.m. Finn glanced at the huge stack of files on his desk. He had a degree in criminology, ten years experience with the military police, top of his class at Quantico, and he was stuck doing filing in a world that was supposed to be going paperless. Special Agent Nathan Levenson, Finn’s mentor and partner, strong-armed a gangly teenager around the grey, chest-high cubicle walls that divided the twentieth floor of the Major Crimes Division. “I didn’t do it. I swear. Anna… I was there to see Anna, ” the kid whimpered, his face pale. “Don’t you know it’s a criminal offense to lie to a federal agent?” Levenson shoved him into a chair across the aisle from Finn’s desk. The youth fell silent, staring at the ground. He squirmed in his seat, but with his hands cuffed behind him, he couldn’t seem to get comfortable. Eventually, he leant to one side in an attempt to accommodate the unnatural position. “Anything I can do?” Finn asked, hoping for a reprieve from the stack of paperwork. “No, as a probationary agent you can stick to what you’re good at.” “Filing?” “Exactly.” Levenson smiled, rubbing a hand over his smooth, bald head. Finn resisted the temptation to punch the smile from Nathan’s face; instead he stood at his desk, and flicked through the stack of papers. There were at least six months worth of documents, all of them Levenson’s. The special agent was obviously behind, and had decided to foist the work onto him, a junior agent.
